Extreme Self Care

Dearest soulful being,  

It’s a lot to take in… the loss, loss of life and jobs, loss of feelings of safety and comfort. But it is essential that you feel the feelings so they can move through you. Over the past eight years I have implemented extreme self-care for myself and taught this to my students and my clients around the world. Here are my 6 go to self care practices. Stay safe, positive and well and always live in a high vibration! 

1. Surrender – When it comes to self care surrender may seem a little strange but  surrender means you allow yourself to be held in the moment. As a medium, the gift of surrender means I let go of my ego self, I open up so I can see more deeply into any situation that I’m working on and for my clients. It’s as if I am lifted on a cloud and I’m able to be held in the blank and the emptiness. Allow yourself to surrender to the moment and be present in the now, this will be one of the biggest gifts you can give yourself.  My go-to is the Serenity Prayer. “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”. 

2. Rest – Go slow, take it easy.  Extreme self-care means sleep in, take naps, sit and just be. We are all stressed out and fearful of what is next, you are not lazy if you rest.  Give from your abundance and not from your reserve. It is so essential that you put your energy and yourself first so that you have what you need to be there for the other people in your life. This helps you respond to situations with compassion, kindness, observation and empathy. 

3. Meditate – It may seem silly and obvious to say to meditate during chaos but recent studies have shown that as little as 11 hours of cumulative meditation has been shown to actually shift the patterns in the brain, reduce anxiety, boost the immune system, and bring the body into resilience. By cumulative, they mean it could happen over a month or year but 11 hours of meditation total so remember even 5 minutes makes a difference! 

4. Abhyanga – Oiling the body. In Ayurvedic medicine, a body massage with oil is essential. The benefits include increased circulation, calming the nerves, lubricates the joints, better sleep at night and purifies the skin, which is your largest organ.  To start, use warm sesame or coconut oil, perhaps 1/3 cup, then dip your fingers in the oil and apply light pressure to your heart, belly, hands, feet, apply the oil in a circular motion throughout your whole body and then allow yourself to rest and let your body digest the healing benefits. 

5. Tonglen – One of my favorite meditative practices is Tonglen. Here is a meditation led by Pema Chödrön.  It is to focus on relieving suffering for all beings everywhere! I’ve been doing it twice a day.

6. Power Posing – As a teacher of therapeutic yoga I understand the importance of power posing and positioning our bodies. Here is a really fun video by Amy Cuddy about power posing. Remember your body is always listening and responding to how you feel- so enjoy this link to power posing.

Five Immune Boosters & Three Guided Meditations

Uncertainty can be cause for fear or opportunity. As our world continues to evolve through this pandemic, climate changes and new thought streams I encourage you to see this as part of our shift as humanity. Change can feel scary and depressing but it is necessary to awaken. During this time it’s important to remember We Are all in this Together so let us move forward in community and with unity.

Here are 5 Immune Busters and 3 Guided Meditations just for you!  Stress can cause us to lose enthusiasm for living, can bog down our creativity and cause us to sink into unhealthy patterns. Please enjoy these resources and spend some time in nature during these transitional times.

1. Golden Light. When you wake up, slowly open your eyes and imagine that you are breathing in a new energy by envisioning the air as golden flecks of source energy.  As you inhale imagine you are covered in a beautiful, golden light.  Then as you shower, imagine the water as a dazzling, white energy buzzing around your being and clearing out old negative self defeating thoughts and feelings.  This process helps you clear and beat stress by filling your being with healing positive light. 

2. Your feet are the key. Your feet hold the energy of your whole body.  In reflexology every point on the foot mirrors a part of your body.  Some core points are the toes, which impact the brain, eyes and ears.  The middle of the food holds the kidneys, liver and adrenal glands. The arch of the foot impacts the spine.  You can use a tennis ball to massage the bottom of your foot by putting the ball on the floor and rolling it back and forth.  This will help remove the stuck energy in your feet and energize your body.  Walk barefoot on the earth, allow your big toes to kiss each other to awaken and stimulate the brain and bring both sides of your body into alignment. 

3. Hum.  Humming is a quick and easy way to shift your energy.  It helps by encouraging more breath  to come into your body, it clears out stuck energy in your eyes, brain and mouth.  All that you say, hear, see and think can get trapped in your upper chakras and create a pattern.  Humming breaks up that stale energy and stress by lifting you into a new vibration.  Numerous studies show it actually increases happiness and slows down racing thoughts.  Hum for 20 minutes a day- you can break it up into 5 or 10 minute segments.

4. Ear Massage. Your ears are the center of nerve stimulation for the body. Just like your feet, your ears are full of reflexology points that are directly linked to your brain and nervous system. Research has shown that your ears can even boost your immune system.  The entrance to your ear canal is directly above where we tend to pierce our ear lobes is the heart activation point. Think about the power of gems in the ears.  It has become part of cultures worldwide to pierce the ears and wear gemstones and symbols.  This is not only creating a style; it creates a vibratory energy that actually amplifies your immune system! 

Start by taking off your earrings if you wear them, move your hair away from the ears, take your thumb and first finger dip your finger in either sesame seed oil or coconut oil and begin by rubbing your earlobes in a circular fashion, do both sides.  Then oil the outsides of the ears by sliding the oil along the length of the ears, then pull the  earlobes out, extending the elbows as you pull, then using your pointer fingers, oil the insides of the ears and then pull on the mastoid bone which circles inside the ear itself.  Now rub and oil the backs of your ears. And of course, use your intuition as you massage.  Take 7 – 10 minutes a day to do this.  Remember your ears also digest sound so give them a rest by following up with 10-15 minutes of silence. 

5. Listen to Solfeggio Frequencies. Tones can heal. “Solfeggio frequencies make up the ancient 6-tone scale thought to have been used in sacred music, including the beautiful and well known Gregorian Chants.
